On May 28th 2014, The Atkinson Centre for Mature and Part-time Students celebrated the successes and achievements of numerous mature students graduating in June and the dedication of our valued peer mentors at the Mature Student Community Celebration. The celebration also recognized alumni for all of their contributions and reflected on the accomplishments of the 2013/2014 school year.

The May 2014 Community Celebration inspired a piece of artwork that now hangs in the ACMAPS office behind the front desk. The artwork was created by Ashley Grenville from the Centre for Student Community & Leadership Development, with the help of the attendees at the event.

Ashley has been working in Residence Life at York University for over a decade and graduated from York with a Masters in Art History, specializing in miniature art. Ashley works part-time graphically recording and facilitating discussions, which consists of creating visual representations of key messages that are brought up through group discussions, lectures or presentations. Ashley states that the piece that she created for ACMAPS "was inspired by the experiences shared by ACMAPS members at varying points in their degree, their thoughts, worries, successes and [what they've learned]." The result is a colourful collage of optimism, support and encouragement for mature students to make the best of their university experience.

The Mature Student Community Celebration takes place every year after final exams. It is an opportunity for students to take a moment to thoroughly appreciate all of the hard work that they put into their studies and to share their success with their peers. ACMAPS wants to ensure that mature students realize just how far they've come, how proud the staff at ACMAPS are to see them reach their goals, and to thank students for allowing ACMAPS to be a part of their journey. Most of all, the Mature Student Community Celebration is, after all, a celebration--so you can expect laughter, merriment, food and good company.

ACMAPS would like to sincerely thank Ashley Grenville for the beautiful art piece she created which so aptly captures the supportive atmosphere of the Mature Student Community Celebration. ACMAPS would also like to thank all of the mature student peer mentors who generously volunteer their time and expertise each year to inform and guide their fellow mature students. Your contributions help us achieve our mandate to support the academic and personal success of mature students at York!

Thank you.
